Removal waves: reading Google Play enforcement in the data
Why removals cluster on some days, how to tell an account termination from a policy sweep, and what the numbers cannot tell you.
Removals are not spread evenly
On a quiet day a few hundred apps leave Google Play. On other days the number jumps several times. Those spikes usually follow an enforcement action: a policy deadline, a sweep against one kind of app, or a batch of account terminations.
One developer, many apps
When dozens of apps from the same developer disappear on the same date, the account was most likely terminated or closed. Group a day’s removals by developer to see it.
One category, many developers
When removals concentrate in one category across many developers, a policy sweep is the likely cause: loan apps, VPNs and children’s apps have all seen such waves.
Limits
- The store never publishes the reason for a removal.
- Some apps are unpublished by their own developers and come back later.
- A removal date is the night we noticed it, which can be up to a day after the app went down.
